Reading Like a Historian

Debates

The New York Times hosts a blog called The Learning Network.  It is a great resource that provides teaching and learning materials and ideas based on New York Times content.  Watch this quick video to learn more about how you can use The Learning Network in your classroom.

The Reading Like a Historian curriculum engages students in historical inquiry. Each lesson revolves around a central historical question and features sets of primary documents designed for groups of students with diverse reading skills and abilities.  This curriculum teaches students how to investigate historical questions by employing reading strategies such as sourcing, contextualizing, corroborating, and close reading.  Find more information and lesson plans here

A great way for students to use critical thinking skills and analyze topics from several viewpoints is a debate. Students can read a passage, text, or artifacts that relate to a topic.  Students can choose sides based on their evidence. They will use comprehension skills to justify their points of view. A follow up of writing point of view pieces can be added.
